MYTH #1: Buying textbooks from an online retailer is always more convenient.   MYTH #2: Buying textbooks online is always safe.
According to NACS’ Student WatchTM 2009, Confessions of College Student Consumers, fully one-quarter of the students that purchase some of their course materials online do so from their college store’s web site.
According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center’s 2008 Annual Report, complaints of online
fraud hit an all time high last year, increasing by 33.1% over the previous year. The report states that the average individual lost approximately $931.
MYTH #3:Most students spend nearly $1,000 each year on textbooks.   MYTH #4:The college store makes a huge profit on textbooks.

Sources such as the College Board and National Center for Education Statistics are often cited when it comes to student budgeting for textbooks; however, both sources include non-textbook supplies, technology, and course fees in their calculations. One California study
estimates that such expenses can add as much as $738 to the total.

According to NACS OnCampus Research, the college store makes only 6.3 cents on every dollar spent on new textbooks. The remaining money goes toward the publisher, the author, and freight expense.
